Traveling with a gaming system can become frustrating when the hotel TV has locked inputs or the Wi-Fi requires a browser login. These solutions work for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Steam Deck, and similar devices.
What to Pack
Bring:
- Power and controller-charging cables
- HDMI cable
- Ethernet cable
- Mobile hotspot
- Optional travel router or portable monitor
- A dock for Nintendo Switch or handheld PCs
Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV output.
Connect to the Hotel TV
Connect your PlayStation or Xbox directly to an available HDMI port. Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and handheld PCs require a compatible dock or USB-C hub.
Use the television’s Input or Source button to select the correct HDMI port. If the hotel has locked the inputs, contact the front desk instead of disconnecting the hotel’s equipment. A portable monitor is the most dependable backup.
Connect to Hotel Wi-Fi
Open the system’s network settings and select the hotel network:
- PlayStation: Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection
- Xbox: Settings > General > Network Settings
- Nintendo: System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings
- Steam Deck: Settings > Internet
Enter the hotel password and complete any login page that appears. PlayStation may display a How to Authenticateoption that lets you finish the hotel login using your phone.
Find Your IP and MAC Addresses
Hotels normally need your system’s MAC address, not its IP address, to authorize it manually.
- PlayStation: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information
- Xbox: Settings > General > Network Settings > Advanced Settings
- Nintendo: System Settings > Internet
- Steam Deck: Settings > Internet, then select the connection
Call the hotel’s internet support and ask them to register the MAC address. Only enter a manual IP address if support provides the correct settings.
Connection Workarounds
Mobile Hotspot
Connect the system to your phone’s hotspot. Use 5GHz when available, keep the phone charging, and monitor data usage. Large downloads can consume data quickly.
Ethernet
Use a LAN cable if the room has an active Ethernet port. Nintendo and handheld systems may require an adapter or dock.
Travel Router
A travel router connects to the hotel network and creates a private network for all your devices. You can complete the hotel login through your phone or laptop before connecting the console.
Remote Play
PlayStation, Xbox, and compatible PC services support remote play. Set it up and test it before leaving home.
